Hand-crafted in the Austrian Alps, SAMINA is designed to promote optimal health through deep, restorative sleep. As a small, family-owned business, we are proud to be an independent retailer of these world-class products. We are passionate about helping our customers find the rest they’ve been missing, and our dedicated sleep advisers are specially trained to guide you through the SAMINA system and answer any questions you may have.
Our Team
Founded by Claus Pummer in 1998, Natural by Design, Corp. is a lifestyle furnishings company and the exclusive North American importer of SAMINA—a luxury brand of organic mattresses and sleep products.
Claus initially formed his company in Canada after emigrating there from his native Germany in 1998. In 2013, Denise partnered with Claus in marriage and in business. They maintained two store locations for a couple of years, the original in the Ontario, Canada and the second in Dallas, TX.
With a renewed focus on the SAMINA brand of healthy sleep systems and products, they consolidated both locations into a new boutique showroom in southern California where holistic lifestyles and organic products flourished.

Claus Pummer
President
SAMINA USA & Canada
Born in Germany, Claus Pummer trained as a master carpenter before immigrating to Canada in 1998. From furniture design and manufacturing, wholesale and retail, he has worked for decades as an entrepreneur. Now, his company, Natural by Design Corp D/B/A/ SAMINA Sleep focuses on the piece of furniture with the greatest impact on life – your bed. He credits much of his own good health to quality rest and recovery with SAMINA and has become a holistic sleep evangelist.
Claus has two adult children he is immensely proud of: Vanessa and Benjamin.

Denise supports Claus as his partner in life and business. Together, they share a mission to encourage the sleep-deprived to get the healthy sleep they need and everyone to enjoy being well-rested for the betterment of society. Following her career in human resources, she now employs her skills to promote the benefits of a good night’s sleep. From personal experience, she also knows the positive changes prioritizing sleep has made on her own wellbeing and is a devoted fan of SAMINA.
Denise has one beloved adult daughter, Hannah, and her sweet dogs, Sol and Charlie.
Benjamin Pummer

Benjamin Pummer enjoyed his childhood as the son of an entrepreneur working in the store and helping with deliveries on weekends and school holidays. He’s been a SAMINA sleeper since adolescence and considers his SAMINA sleep system one of his most valuable possessions. After high school, he gained invaluable experience working with a healthy home expert. His knowledge around the effects of artificial lighting, mold and air quality, and EMFs on human health expanded immensely. With strong values for holistic health and well-being, he joined the family business in 2025.
Benjamin lives in southern California where he is responsible for the Pasadena SAMINA Sleep store and Ventura County warehouse operations.
John Nelles

John Nelles has been a SAMINA sleeper for 15+ years and believes in the product enough he decided to join the company as a local Canadian representative. Professionally, he has spent over 35 years as a professional actor, dialect coach, professor, and fight director in the arts working with many award winning directors, and actors, in film, television, theatre, video games and more. Since 2004, he has worked as a professional ski instructor in the winter teaching several different systems and has over 50 years of skiing experience.
John lives in Toronto, Canada with his wife and daughter, Emma, who has followed her father’s footsteps into the acting business.
